Dozens of dead fish left floating in river in Clevedon due to coronavirus restrictions

Dozens of dead fish have been left floating in a river in Clevedon, while an investigation is launched.

Local people out walking along the Land Yeo in the seaside town reported seeing the fish, including pike and bream, dead in the water over the past 10 days.

The dead fish were spotted in the section of river between Strode Road and Marshalls Field.

Residents, concerned at the volume of dead fish, reported the issue to the Environment Agency which is investigating.

However, due to the current Government restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, the fish will not be removed from the water.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “We are aware of more than 30 dead fish, including some large pike, in the Land Yeo near Clevedon.

“We are attending site to investigate this, strictly following safe working and distancing advice from Government.

“We appreciate that this is not a pleasant sight but feel, under the current guidance from the government around Covid19, we are not able to remove the dead fish at this time and our preferred approach is to let the fish degrade naturally.”"
