Dozens of Britons on board crashed Air India Dreamliner

  • An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner, flight AI171 bound for London Gatwick, crashed in a residential area of Gujarat, India, shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport.
  • There were 242 people on board, including 169 Indian, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian national.
  • The plane crashed five minutes after takeoff, following a mayday call, and hit a hostel building for doctors in Meghani Nagar.
  • The aircraft, registration VT-ANB and delivered to Air India in 2014, experienced its first fatal incident involving a 787; the cause is currently unknown, with no immediate indication of technical issues.
  • Air India has established a passenger hotline (1800 5691 444) and is cooperating with authorities in the investigation.
