Dozens of assisted living flats could be built next to new North Shields Aldi

More than 50 apartments for older people could be built on a former North Shields hospital site if fresh plans are approved.

Sea Island Developments is behind proposals to build 51 "extra care" units on the former site of the Tynemouth Victoria Jubilee Infirmary.

If the plans are given the go-ahead the property will be built next to a new Aldi, which is currently under construction.

A design and access statement submitted to North Tyneside Council states that the housing will be separated from the supermarket by an acoustic fence.

Extra care housing, also described as assisted living, means that residents live in their own flats but have access to support from staff round the clock.

The scheme, which is made up of one-bedroom apartments, also features communal facilities such as a shared activity room and kitchen.

The statement said the building has been designed to make life easier for people who suffer from dementia.

It said: "It was important to avoid a long, singular corridor as this can feel oppressive and create problems with way-finding, particularly for dementia sufferers. Therefore the corridors have been staggered along the building."

The applicant also claimed the project would create a "high quality" development and would "improve" the site.

The council is expected to decide on the proposals by the end of June.
