Dozens Missing At Sea In Italian Shipwrecks

Boston Police and Coast Guard boats search the water for the body of Charles Stuart, who police believed jumped from the Tobin Bridge in Boston, Jan. 4, 1990. On Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, Boston Mayo

Two separate shipwrecks off the Italian southern coast have resulted in a devastating loss of life, with dozens of people missing and several confirmed dead. The incidents, which occurred near Calabria and Lampedusa island, have once again highlighted the dangers faced by migrants attempting perilous sea crossings in search of safety and better opportunities.

In the first shipwreck, a boat carrying migrants from Iran, Syria, and Iraq caught fire and capsized approximately 125 miles off Calabria. Of the 75 individuals on board, only 11 were rescued, while 64 remain unaccounted for. The survivors, who endured a harrowing eight-day journey from Turkey, were brought ashore in Roccella Jonica, where they received medical attention. Tragically, one of the rescued migrants passed away shortly after reaching land.

Meanwhile, a second shipwreck near Lampedusa island resulted in the discovery of 10 bodies trapped below the deck of a wooden boat. The crew of the rescue vessel, Nadir, managed to save 51 individuals from the waterlogged vessel, including two who were unconscious. Regrettably, the remains of 10 individuals were found in the flooded lower deck, underscoring the perilous conditions faced by those attempting the treacherous sea journey.

The Italian Coast Guard, along with support from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex, swiftly mobilized search-and-rescue efforts in response to distress calls from the stricken vessels. Despite the valiant efforts of rescue teams, the tragic outcomes of these shipwrecks serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for coordinated international action to prevent further loss of life at sea.
