Dozens of people were injured on Tuesday in an earthquake that struck southeast Turkey.

The state-run Anadolu news agency reported that 39 people were wounded and buildings were damaged in the tremor that struck the Adiyaman province.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake, which struck at 0034 GMT, had a magnitude of 5.2 and occurred at a depth of 10 km (6 miles).

Anadolu quoted Health Minister Ahmet Demircan as saying 35 of the 39 injured were being treated but none were in a serious condition. Images posted on social media showed serious damage to numerous houses.

The regional governor said the injuries were caused as people fled their homes in panic.

Anadolu quoted victim Zeynep Berk whose house collapsed on her and four others. Neighbors rescued the family and attempts to recover their 150 animals continue.

The quake was felt in neighboring provinces. Turkey's Kandilli Earthquake Monitoring Center recorded at least 13 aftershocks.

Schools closed for the day, local media reported.
