Dozens injured after two trains crash into each other 'due to signal failure'

Dozens are believed to be injured after two passengers trains collided in Brazil.

The two Metropolitan trains crashed in the Brazilian city of Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco in the country's northeast, according to reports.

Brazilian media are reporting one train rear-ended another train in front that had been stopped at a station, with some speculating the smash was linked to a signal failure.

Cofina Media reports that at least 33 people were injured in the collision shortly after 6am local time at Iparanga Station.

Emergency services reportedly took the dozens of injured passengers to hospitals in the city's centre.

None appeared to have life-threatening injuries, local emergency services told reporters.

Many of those injured in the collision remained in hospital with under observation with bruises, back pain and other minor injuries by midday Tuesday local time.

The Iparanga Station is part of the Metropolitano de Recife, which serves the capital and neighbouring cities and is said to transport more than 250,000 passengers daily.
