Dozens gather for balloon release after mum's sudden death

A mum who died the day after her birthday has left behind her nine-year-old daughter.

Nicola Madden, 43, was taking part in a meeting online when she suffered a suspected heart attack on Tuesday, January 11.

Her nine-year-old daughter Charlotte acted quickly, calling dad Stuart McDougall, but Nicola tragically died.

Nicola's friends and family set up a GoFundMe following her death to help with funeral costs and have been astounded as more than £6,000 being raised in just a few days.

Today saw people who knew Nicola gather at Crosby Coastal Park near Crosby Lakeside Centre to release balloons in her memory.

Dozens gathered for the emotional tribute just days after the civil servant's unexpected death.

Nicola's ex-partner and father of Charlotte, Stuart McDougall, previously spoke to the ECHO and was there to pay tribute to the "popular" mum-of-one from Waterloo.

He told the ECHO earlier this week: "If you have a look at the GoFundMe or any of the online stuff you'll see that there's been a massive amount of responses. She's touched a lot of people. I was with her for nearly 20 years, we have a nine-year-old daughter.

"We did split up but we were still very good friends. Most don't even have that luxury. It's still painful though. Nobody could ever say a bad thing about her.

"You don't meet many people like that now. She's worked at many places over the years so there are plenty of people in all these different workplaces that have come out and said how much they miss her.

He continued: "It's hard to put things into words. She was just a good character that everyone well and truly liked."
