Dozens attend Prestwich anti-racism rally in solidarity with Black Lives Matter

Dozens of protesters gathered in Prestwich this evening to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Attendees knelt as one and brought signs to a rally held at the Longfield Centre, off Bury New Road, that mimicked scenes from around the world.

The movement has grown rapidly since the death of George Floyd, a black American man who died on May 25 after a Minneapolis police officer restrained him by holding a knee on his neck for several minutes.

Protesters in Prestwich held now-familiar signs and chanted the phrase "no justice, no peace", a common rallying cry in recent Black Lives Matter marches.

Judy Paskell, from Bury, helped to arrange the event and said she was pleased with how many people had attended.

"We're here because the death of George Floyd has brought to a head all these feelings of anger," she said.

"We haven't felt in Prestwich that we could do anything but now that I think that millions of us around the world have been brought together and we can ensure that there is real change.

"Black and ethnic minority people here just as much as America don't have justice."

The Prestwich rally was not the only anti-racism event held in Greater Manchester this afternoon, with a similar protest taking place in Salford and more planned for the weekend.

But, while the vast majority of attendees supported the Black Lives Matter movement, there were a handful of people who had come to oppose the protest.

Among them was Rita Ricketts from Bolton who said she was against the demonstration. She argued people should instead be fighting against police brutality generally and that the Black Lives Matter message was creating racial tensions.
