Dozens attend Edinburgh candle lit vigil for murdered teacher Ashling Murphy

A candlelit vigil has been held at the 'Sarah Everard Tree' in The Meadows park for murdered Irish teacher Ashling Murphy as students and locals gathered to pay respects to the 23-year-old.

Ashling Murphy, 23, from Tullamore in County Offaly, died after being attacked while running along the Grand Canal outside Tullamore, County Offaly, on Wednesday.

The murder of the young teacher has shocked the nation as another young woman who had her whole life ahead of her has been robbed of that.

Around 80 people attended to pay their respects and light candles for Ashling tonight.

23-year-old Sarah Ní Dochartaigh who attended the vigil told Edinburgh Live: "I was there, it was very moving to see so many people turn up to stand with those mourning in Ireland.

"There was an air of collective grief, and while it was recognised that this is the result of a societal and systemic issue through gathering around the tree dedicated to Sarah Everard, Ashling's memory was centred at the vigil."

The tragedy follows the conviction of Wayne Couzens for the kidnap, rape and murder of Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive, as she walked home in March last year.

Couzens, who at the time of the crime was a serving Metropolitan police officer, was sentenced to life in prison.

Last month, Koci Selamaj accepted responsibility for the death of the 28-year-old schoolteacher Sabina Nessa in London in September.

She was found dead a day after leaving her home to meet a friend in a nearby bar. Selamaj pleaded not guilty to her murder and the trial is continuing.
