Tokyo reported 471 new cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday, down 71 from a week earlier.
The daily tally has fallen below that of the same day in the previous week for the 19th day in a row.
In Osaka Prefecture, 201 new infections were confirmed, the first time in three days for the daily tally to exceed 200. Twenty-one people with COVID-19 were confirmed to have died in the prefecture.
In the capital, the seven-day moving average of new cases was 537, or 87.9% of the previous seven-day period's figure of 611, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government. The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients in Tokyo decreased by five to 70.
