Downton Abbey star teases upcoming film adaptation: 'You're going to have tears'

The cast and crew of the upcoming Downton Abbey film have, for the most part, been tight-lipped regarding the production’s details. However, actor Allen Leech – who played ex-chauffer Allen Leech on the series – has finally offered some insight on what we can expect.

While attending the premiere Bohemian Rhapsody, Leech revealed that he has wrapped his scenes in the film and promised: “it’s a big, epic story that’s definitely going to fill the big screen”.

“That was our worry about taking the show from the small screen to the big screen,” he said, according to Vanity Fair. ”But you have Julian Fellowes, who won an Oscar for writing, and he’s done a great job with the story.”

Although the series originally ended in 2016, the new film promises to add one more chapter to the story. Although it may not be one we expect.

“I was very surprised about the angle that Julian went with,” Leech teased. “But then again, I was also amazed that he managed to get the entire 22-[member] cast to have their own story within the contained two-hour movie. He’s done an amazing job.”

There’s one more thing the actor wanted to make clear: “It’s Julian—you’re going to have tears. He’s never too saccharine-sweet, so be prepared for everything.”

Leech will return alongside Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Joanne Froggatt, Elizabeth McGovern, and Laura Carmichael.

The Downton Abbey film will be released in cinemas on 20 September 2019.
