Downton Abbey movie beats Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in first-day advance ticket sales

Downton Abbey sold more advance tickets on the first day of sales in the US than any other drama movie in 2019, according to ticketing company Fandango.

The new movie revisits the Crawley family from the hit British period drama as they await a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary.

“It’s pretty significant to see a drama performing this well in its first day of sales, considering it is outpacing all other 2019 dramas at the same point in the Fandango sales cycle,” managing editor of Fandango Erik Davis told Fox Business on Wednesday.

 “To show you just how well it’s currently performing, the film is outselling Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in their first full days of advance ticket sales on Fandango,” Davis added.

The film is set in 1927, at a time when the Crawley’s fortune isn’t what it was once – but nevertheless, the family rush to make sure everything is in place for the royals’ arrival.

Downton Abbey, which sees Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery reprise their roles, will be released in UK cinemas on 13 September 2019.
