Downton Abbey castle sees three pigs named after much-loved characters on show

Downton Abbey has been home to Lady Sybil, Lady Edith and Lady Mary once again – with three pigs born at Highclere Castle named after the three famous characters.

Lady Carnarvon - the owner of Highclere Castle, where the period drama was set - reveals the three little aristocratic pigs have been thriving in their plush pens.

Lady Mary is a “rather special” pig, and sits up “rather like a dog” to be petted and scratched - she is “appreciative of the attention and quite relaxed”.

But Lady Sybil is a headstrong sow and refuses to return to her pen at night.

An exhausted Lady Carnarvon admits: “It is very hard to move a large obdurate pig around.”

While those two well-bred ladies of the manor are now the proud parents of nine piglets each, Lady Edith has moved on to pastures new, and now shares a home with Countryfile’s Adam Henson.

Asked what actresses Michelle Dockery, Jessica Findlay and Laura Carmichael might make of their new namesakes, Lady Carnarvon says: “I would hope that the actors take it all in good humour and affection on our side.”

In the ITV series, the Grantham family take to pig rearing, with Lady Mary tasked with tending to troughs when Lord Grantham head off to America.
