KHON KAEN: The municipality of this northeastern province was flooded after strong winds and heavy rain battered the city on Sunday.

Several roads in Muang district were inundated. Mittaphab Highway, the main inter-provincial road, was flooded for five kilometres with the water level up to 50 centimetres high.

The floodwater also damaged dozens of motorcycles parked on the road, and motorists on Mittaphab were forced to detour to alternative roads to avoid impassable stretches.

Khon Kaen mayor Theerasak Teekayuphan said the flooding receded following two hours of work, after heavy rainfall and strong winds pounded the municipality in the afternoon.

The Meteorological Department issued a warning on Sunday that more rain could hit some areas of the northern, northeastern, central, and eastern regions, as well as the Andaman coast, throughout the week.

The country officially entered the wet season on May 26 and it will last into mid-October.
