Downpatrick parents of children with autism walk to fund therapies

Parents of children with autism in Co Down have come together on a special challenge to help fund therapies for their children.

Members of the Downpatrick Autism Family Support Group took on Fermanagh's Stairway to Heaven to raise much-needed funds.

These are therapies such as occupational therapy, music therapy, and speech & language which the parents know will help their children, but would otherwise be unavailable to them if they did not raise the funds themselves.

Aine Sloan, one of the members who set up the group, said: "There are a lot more therapies we want to bring to the area, we did a big fundraiser last year which kept us going but we want to offer more therapies for children with more complex needs.

"Our group would support children in mainstream school and those children are not able to access any of those therapies, we would like to make it available to them."

Downpatrick Autism Family Support Group has been running since October 2017 and is growing in size weekly.

The team of dedicated parents and careers aim to promote Autism Awareness & Acceptance in the Downpatrick area.

They provide a friendly and non-judgemental environment for those with personal experiences of Autism, to share their stories and to give guidance during or after the gruelling diagnosis stages.

On Saturday, July 27, a group of parents took on the Fermanagh challenge and are hoping it will raise even more than last year to help fund the expensive therapies.
