Downpatrick electricity cut affecting large number of customers

A large number of homes and businesses in Co Down are experiencing a power cut on Wednesday evening.

It is understood that areas around Downpatrick, Newcastle and Crossgar have been affected since around 1pm due to two separate issues.

Some businesses have reported having to turn people away.

SDLP MLA Colin McGrath told Belfast Live: "We've had two power cuts today, one this afternoon and one this evening. I got speaking to NIE and apparently the two aren't connected.

"The first was a transmission fault and the second is apparently a swan flew into power lines on the Strangford Road.

"It's the third time in three weeks - I'm not happy with that. It doesn't just happen - we expect it to be working."

An NIE spokesperson said: "Engineers have located an overhead line down in the area, repairs to take place later this evening.

"Supply may go off while repairs are taking place."
