Downpatrick crash: PSNI issue statement after pedestrian dies after being 'struck by car'

Police are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage after a male pedestrian died in Co Down on Wednesday night.

It was reported at around 8.30pm on October 27 that the man had 'been struck by a car' in a one vehicle crash in Downpatrick.

He died at the scene on the Ballydugan Road at the Downe Retail Park.

The road was closed following the incident has since reopened.

PSNI Inspector Campbell said: “Enquires are continuing and the Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the incident or who has dashcam footage or any other information to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1946 27/10/21.”

MLA for South Down Colin McGrath paid tribute after the incident.

He said: "So sad to hear this devastating news from Downpatrick tonight [Wednesday]. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased tonight. Thinking of all involved."

Sinn Féin Councillor for Downpatrick and Lecale, Oonagh Hanlon added: "So sorry to read this devastating news. Thinking of their family & friends."

Local SDLP Councillor John Trainor said: "Such tragic news tonight. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased tonight and my thoughts are with all those involved."

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) attended the scene on Wednesday night.

A NIAS spokesperson told Belfast Live: “NIAS received a report of a RTC involving a pedestrian on the Ballydugan Road in Downpatrick at 20:38.

“An Emergency Crew and Hart Crew were dispatched to the scene.

“Nobody was taken from the scene.”
