Download Festival has been chosen to host a Government pilot event next month, with no social distancing required.
The massive rock festival will be resurrected as scientists continue to examine how Covid-19 transmission works in crowds.
Capacity at the event will be reduced from its usual 111,000 down to 10,000, and the usual five day camping reduced to three days.
The pilot event will take place between June 18 and 20 at its usual home of Donington Park in Leicestershire.
Organisers said it sounds 'completely mental' to be able to go ahead with their much-loved event, albeit on a smaller scale.
The line up hasn't yet been announced but is due to be revealed on Friday May 28.
Everyone on site will have to be over 16, and will need to take a lateral flow test with a negative result before entry.
Refunds will be offered for anyone who tests positive.
Researchers from Public Health England will oversee the event, gathering data on transmission risk, the suspension of social distancing and face coverings over several consecutive days.
The Download Pilot is part of the second phase of the Events Research Programme and follows a nightclub event in Liverpool, the Brit Awards and FA Cup matches.
Also in the second phase will be an England cricket Test match and horse racing's Royal Ascot.
Download Festival hasn't taken place since the summer of 2019, and had already pushed its full-scale line up back to 2022.
Organisers said in a statement: "You’ll be able to mosh, dance, hug your fellow Downloaders, and rock out without a mask or social distancing.
"Frankly, we can’t think of anything that sounds more awesome after 15 months away from our hallowed ground."
Tickets cost £120 plus booking fee and go on sale on Tuesday June 1 for existing Download Festival 2022 ticket holders.
A general sale will then take place on Thursday June 3.
