Downing Street issue update on Boris Johnson as Prime Minister remains in intensive care

Downing Street has issued an update on the condition of Prime Minister Boris Johnson after he was admitted to intensive care.

The PM was taken to St Thomas' Hospital on Sunday for suggested "routine tests".

However, by Monday evening a spokeperson confirmed Mr Johnson had been transferred to the ICU.

It is understood Boris Johnson is not on a ventilator and is breathing without any other assistance.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said on Tuesday afternoon: "The PM has been stable overnight and remains in good spirits. He has received standard oxygen treatment and is breathing without any other assistance."

The Prime Minster was initially in hospital for 'routine tests' (PA)

Mr Johnson is not understood to be getting any special treatment in hospital and has not received mechanical ventilation 'or non invasive respiratory support'.

First Secretary of State Dominic Raab is deputising for the PM "where necessary" while Mr Johnson remains in hospital.

Mr Raab's first job as stand-in PM will be to lead the Government's emergency daily coronavirus "war Cabinet" meeting today with senior colleagues and the UK's chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, and chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance.

The Downing Street spokeperson also said Mr Johnson 'conveyed a message that he wanted the foreign secretary to assume responsibilities where appropriate'.

They spokesman insisted they had been 'fully frank' throughout regarding the PM's condition.
