Downing Street confirms it is ending daily coronavirus press conferences

Downing Street has announced it is ending the daily coronavirus press conferences.

Instead they have said they will hold events to coincide major announcements.

Today's press conference, which is due to be led by the Prime Minister, is believed to be the last of the daily updates.

A No 10 spokesman said: "From today, the press conferences will no longer be daily.

"We’ll continue to hold press conferences to coincide with significant announcements, including with the PM.

"We will be publishing all of the data which has previously been included in the press conference slides on gov.uk every week day."

The press conferences began in March and have been the centre of the Government's communication strategy for getting announcements out to the public.

It made household names of otherwise backroom roles like the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific Advisor, Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance.

It also allowed journalists and the public to quiz ministers everyday on the Government's response to the pandemic.
