A Downers Grove man is facing felony charges for allegedly stealing from a car and trying to rob a student Tuesday on the North Central College campus in west suburban Naperville.

Donald Herkel III, 36, was charged with attempted aggravated robbery and burglary to a motor vehicle on school grounds, the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office said.

About 1 a.m. Tuesday, a North Central College student saw Herkel standing by his friend’s car with the door open, prosecutors said. When he saw the student, Herkel allegedly approached him and threatened to shoot him unless he gave up everything he had.

The student ran away from Herkel and reported the incident to the authorities, who found and arrested Herkel about half an hour later near the Barnes and Noble parking lot by Chicago Avenue and Washington Street, prosecutors said. He was allegedly in possession of STIG nicotine pods, which were believed to be stolen from the car.

“School safety remains a top priority of my administration and with school now back in session students have the absolute right to feel safe not only in their classrooms but throughout their campus,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said.

Berlin appeared in bond court Tuesday afternoon and his bail was set at $200,000, prosecutors said. He is next due in court Sept. 9.
