Downers Grove man arrested after attack on officer, standoff

Nov. 20--A Downers Grove man is facing felony charges for allegedly striking a police officer, taking his Taser and barricading himself inside his apartment for nearly three hours before surrendering, law enforcement officials said.

The 53-year-old man was arrested late Wednesday afternoon, Lt. Michael Willison said in a release.

The incident began at 2:50 p.m. when the officer went to an apartment building at 2415 Ogden Ave. in response to a disturbance. Police said the man was acting irrationally and blocking other residents from entering the building.

When the officer approached the man about his behavior, he struck the officer, Willison said.

The two struggled as the officer tried to get control of the man, Willison said. At some point, the man took the officer's Taser, fled to his apartment and barricaded the door.

Police tried several times to contact the man, without success, Willison said. Authorities brought in the FIAT SWAT team comprising several DuPage County departments, and police finally reached the man by telephone, Willison said. He surrendered at 5:47 p.m.

Police took the man to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital for evaluation. The officer was not seriously injured. Felony charges are pending, Willison said.
