Downend Fireworks 2020: Popular display cancelled

One of the biggest fireworks and bonfire displays in Bristol will not go ahead this year as organisers fear public safety.

The much loved event which attracts 8,000 to 10,000 people every year at the King George V Playing Fields in Downend has been cancelled.

The organisers, Downend Round Table Fireworks, announced their decision late on September 9 on Facebook.

The post said: “After careful consideration, Downend Round Table is sad to announce the 2020 fireworks display will not take place.

“The Coronavirus pandemic means we are not able to guarantee the safety of thousands of members of the public that attend.

“This has been a difficult decision for us, as all the profits from the fireworks event goes towards supporting charities and good causes in Downend and the wider area.

“We are already working hard on plans for next year, and are making sure we will come back with a great event for our 50th Anniversary in 2021.”

Every year Downend Round Table raises tens of thousands of pounds in the local area to support charities, including Network Counselling and Training Bristol, which was chosen in 2019.

Paul Wells chairman of Downend Round Table said: "The whole team is obviously disappointed that we won't be able to bring this well-loved event to the community.

"As our main fundraising event the show is so important to us, so it's been a really difficult decision. We had already started discussing our 50th event next year, and how we can make it bigger and better than ever."

After news of the cancelled November event broke to its social media followers, many people were left feeling devastated.

Nicky Leakey said: “This year sucks! Really sorry to hear that – was looking forward to it.”

Lisamarie Clayton said: "This year has been c**p because of this pandemic spoiling good and fun things for us - but now we can’t do them or go to them.”

Mr Wells said next year the group will have its biggest ever display from its fireworks contractors Skyburst, its bonfire and much more.

For now the Downend Round Table continues to meet online and in person for such events as frisbee, golf and virtual horse racing.

He said: "If you live in or near Downend and would like to do more with your time, get in touch with us."
