'Down to earth' Matt Damon greets fans outside set in Cahir Castle, Tipperary

A "down to earth" Matt Damon was spotted greeting Irish super fans before filming historical drama The Last Duel in Co Tipperary.

23-year-old Emma Twomey from Cork couldn't believe her eyes as she filmed the movie star arriving to the Cahir Castle set and said "you can't describe the feeling".

Twomey, who was in the area visiting her boyfriend, posted video footage of each of the stars arriving to set on her TikTok account but said Damon's arrival was that little bit more special.

She said: "It was amazing seeing him right in front of me. I couldn't believe it, seeing a big Hollywood star like Matt right in front of you, you can't describe the feeling.

"Matt was lovely, he engages with people as he walks by and always smiles and waves.

"We were speaking to a few workers and everyone who had spoken to Matt had said that he is so lovely and so down to earth and you can see that by the way he engages with crowds."

Around 20-30 super fans gathered outside the entrance to the old castle in Cahir town to catch a glimpse of the stars.

The Hollywood hunk is back in Ireland working alongside Jodie Comer and Adam Driver for the new Ridley Scott film.

The film stars have all been pictured wearing face covering or face shields while dressed in elaborate medieval costumes.

Twomey, who also filmed Comer and Driver's set arrival, said "Jodie was lovely too" but added Driver made a swift entrance to set.

"He could be afraid of the virus, we don't know," she added.

Ben Affleck also stars in the new show playing King Charles VI who declares Damon's character Knight Jean de Carrouges must settle his dispute with his squire, Driver, by duel.

Jodie Comer plays Damon's wife Marguerite de Carrouges in the drama.

Damon became an unexpected Irish lockdown hero after the coronavirus restriction came into effect almost immediately after his arrival in late March.

Damon and his family spent months living in south Dublin before flying back to the US in May vowing he'd "absolutely" be back, and that he did.

The Last Duel is set to be released in late 2021.
