Down memory lane: Celebrating 750 years since Dumbarton became a Royal burgh

June 1972 saw the Burgh of Dumbarton celebrate the 750th anniversary of the town’s creation as a Royal burgh.

The good people of the burgh were out in force for a parade through the town and various events were held to mark the occasion.

Dumbarton was created a Royal Burgh by King Alexander II, anxious to encourage trade in the area, but also to bestow a mark of favour on those who had stood between his kingdom and the enemy in the past.

His charter announced he had created a burgh at “his new castle of Dumbarton” and gave the Burgesses of the burgh all the liberties enjoyed by the Burgesses of Edinburgh, allowing them a weekly market on a Wednesday and freeing them from tolls throughout the country.
