Down GAA chiefs set to investigate mass brawl at Division One League final

The Down county board are set to investigate the ugly scenes which marred the Division One League final between Burren and Kilcoo on Wednesday evening.

St Mary’s defeated the defending All-Ireland club champions 1-12 to 0-7 at Mayobridge with Shay McArdle scoring the game’s only goal.

However, tempers spilled over 10 minutes from time when a series of brawls broke out involving players from both teams.

When the dust finally settled, referee Conor Curran issued red cards to six players - three from each team.

Burren’s Odhran Murdock, Danny Magill and Ryan Magill were dismissed along with Kilcoo trio Jerome and Ryan Johnston and Sean Og McCusker.

Down officials will await the findings of Curran’s referee’s report before deciding if further disciplinary action will be taken while footage of the game from Down TV might also be made available to the CCC.

A red card would usually rule the aforementioned sextet out of their respective team’s opening league fixture of the 2023 campaign.

However, a more serious infraction and a greater suspension could lead to some players being suspended for the forthcoming club Championship.

Kilcoo begin the defence of their Down, Ulster and All-Ireland titles next Friday night with a blockbuster clash against Clonduff in Páirc Elser Newry (7pm).

Burren also face a tough opening tie as they face Mayobridge on Monday, August 29 (7.30pm) with that game also taking place in Newry.
