Down confirm two-time All-Ireland winner James McCartan returns as manager

Down have confirmed the return of two-time All-Ireland winner James McCartan as their new senior manager.

McCartan was announced as the new boss after a County Board meeting this evening, with former Armagh star, Aidan O’Rourke also returning as coach.

McCartan previously managed Down from late 2009 until 2014 and guided the Mourne men to an All-Ireland Final in 2010 where they narrowly lost to Cork by a point.

Aidan O'Rourke was McCartan's assistant during his first stint as boss and he is back to help out again.

Paddy Tally Tally resigned from the Down job in July, barely a week after his team's heavy Ulster Championship defeat by Donegal.

The former boss is now on the Kerry management team.

There was speculation over the last few weeks that Donegal All-Ireland winning manager, Jim McGuinness was to take the hot seat at Down but he insisted his focus lay with soccer and he will decide his future at the end of the season.

Down will play in Division Two of the National League next year having retained their status this season.
