Doune and Dunblane Show makes welcome return

Having had to cancel the Doune and Dunblane Show in 2020 and 2021, the organisers were glad to reinstate the event at the weekend.

First launched in 1947, the show traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in July.

Worryingly, the weather forecast in the days leading up to the day had warned of wind and heavy showers - however, on Saturday the sun mostly shone.

A large crowd was encouraged to turn up to enjoy a day that featured a wide variety of events and entertainment, together with plenty of opportunities to sample a range of food offerings.

In addition, the show included trade and craft stalls with the Bridge of Allan and Dunblane Rotary Club stand offering its ever-popular Nail in the Bale.

The major focus of the show is on agriculture with a wide range of competitions for cattle, sheep, goats, horses, dogs and vintage farm vehicles, all of which were well represented, including the best of locally produced livestock.

It has a growing equestrian section with a range of qualifying showing classes including working hunter, pony, Clydesdales, Highlands and Shetlands. This includes an ever-popular unaffiliated section that encourages children to come and have a go at showing in an informal setting, together with Pony Club competitions.

The show also included exhibitions of sheep shearing, horse shoeing and crook-making demonstrations.

Rotary Club spokesperson Peter Holmes was among those who enjoyed the day.

He said: “Given the good weather and the entertainment on offer, it was a day for families and friends to enjoy the day out, and there was a great sense of satisfaction in being able to come together after two years of restrictions.”

See Friday’s Observer for results from the show.
