Dougie Freedman explains why Crystal Palace didn't spend bulk of Aaron Wan-Bissaka transfer fee

Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman has explained why the club did not splash the majority of the money brought in by selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka over the summer.

The young full-back completed his £50million move to Old Trafford at the end of June, but by the close of the transfer window last week Palace had not brought in another right-back.

Freedman, who heads up the scouting and recruitment at Selhurst Park, said having such funds available is a new position for the club, with their previous record fee received being the £25million Everton paid for Yannick Bolasie three years ago.

With other clubs aware that Palace's accounts have swelled following a deal, prices for targets inevitably go up.

"People know we have got a bit of money from the Aaron Wan-Bissaka deal so prices are inflated," Freedman told the Balance podcast.

"It is the first time we've been in this position, it is very difficult. Every Palace fan out there, of course they want us to sign some players and I get that but we also want to be responsible.

"In the past, under certain sort of leaderships it has not been responsible with signings and has left the club in difficult moments, I've been involved in them over the years and I don't want that to happen.

"Signings are going to be shrewd, wise and we're going to wait for opportunities and when they come we will be as good as anybody to be in the ring but we have to be patient."

Crystal Palace saw an offer of £23million rejected by CSKA Moscow for striker Fedor Chalov over the summer and were interested in a loan deal for Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker-Peters.
