Doughnut and cookie shop that has gained a 'cult-like' following since lockdown

A city centre bakery has found a 'cult-like' following in Manchester, with one reviewer describing it as serving cookies ‘made out of sugary dreams’.

Gooey has only been on the Manchester food scene for less than two years, but it has already gained a loyal fan base of customers due to the freshly baked products and Instagram-worthy presentation.

The bakery has enjoyed great success since it opened in 2020, and following a period of delivery-only service during lockdown, Gooey set up shop in the kiosk at the entrance of Ducie Street Warehouse.

Queues of people waiting to get their hands on the sweet treats were often spotted down the street.

In May 2021 it further expanded its reach by setting up a site at the popular food and drink venue Hatch, with an outward-facing unit that has direct access to Oxford Road - perfect for appealing to hungry passers by.

Serving a constantly revolving menu of New York inspired cookies, doughnuts and soft-serve ice cream, customers are spoilt for choice.

They can enjoy classic flavours such as chocolate chip cookies and raspberry jam doughnuts, but also seasonal specials previously including a hot cross bun-inspired cookie, or creative inventions such as the ‘Kinderella’ donut, which tastes like a Kinder Buerno.

One reviewer said: “We came to Manchester so over the weekend we decided to stop over and see if the rumors were true. And they are.

“These cookies are made out of sugary dreams. I wish we had a branch down here in London. Since we knew we wouldn’t be back in a while, we got lots of cookies and pastries. Best decision ever.”

Another said: “Gooey Co. is SO good that we just had to buy them again the next day! We opted for the ‘Kinderella’ doughnut, the filling is the same as a kinder bueno, and the triple chocolate, white chocolate and red velvet cookies didn’t disappoint! Deffo worth a visit if you ever find yourself in Manchester!”

A third simply added: “Elite tier cookies and doughnuts.”

Gooey is open from noon to 6pm every Wednesday to Sunday at Hatch and Ducie Street Warehouse, until stock is sold out.

The bakery still offers its delivery service, which runs between Thursday and Sunday. Prices start from £12 for a box of four doughnuts, cookies, or a combination box, and can be ordered for next-day delivery.
