Doug Williams says Redskins seeking competition for Colt McCoy

With Alex Smith out of the picture for now, the Washington Redskins have started to think about getting come competition for Colt McCoy.

Redskins personnel executive Doug Williams talked about the situation recently on SiriusXM NFL Radio (h/t Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk).

“It’s our job in the personnel department to find somebody who can play,” Williams said. “Thank God we have Colt coming back from an injury. We’ve just got to find somebody to mix in there, and we know we’ve got to have that guy, but we’ve build around whoever it is. I think that’s the most important thing.”

This idea would explain why the Redskins thought about Joe Flacco before the Baltimore Ravens traded him to the Denver Broncos.

That report plus the comments from Williams make it clear the Redskins will explore different avenues to get another name at quarterback this offseason.

At the very least, this figures to mean a free agent who can compete for the starting gig. But the possibility of a trade or draft pick should at least make the process interesting for fans.
