Doug Williams says Case Keenum won’t stop Redskins from taking QB early

Don’t count the Washington Redskins out when it comes to a first-round quarterback just yet.

The Redskins might have added Case Keenum via trade, but Senior Vice President of Player Personnel Doug Williams told the media Monday it doesn’t factor into the plans at No. 15, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

And it shouldn’t, of course. Keenum is a worthwhile stopgap player who can start for a year while a rookie sits or even serve as a veteran mentor from the sidelines.

An addition like Keenum shouldn’t stop any team in the first round from grabbing a quarterback if a falling passer is the best player on the team’s board.

For the Redskins, any one of the possible four first-round quarterbacks makes sense if they fall. Both Colt McCoy and Alex Smith remain on the mend, leaving Keenum the only sure thing heading into next season.

In this instance, this quip from a member of a front office doesn’t seem like a smokescreen.
