Doug Sohn marks Hot Doug's closing with Honey Butter Chicken visit

Sept. 24--Doug Sohn, the Chicago link legend, will be in the house -- the "house" being Honey Butter Fried Chicken -- when the Avondale restaurant serves its hybrid sandwich dubbed "The Doug Sohn" to mark the one-year anniversary of the closing of Hot Doug's.

No RSVPs yet from other luminaries (Donald Trump? Taylor Swift? Your third cousin twice removed?), but Doug Sohn, Honey Butter's longtime friend and neighbor, does plan to be there to kick off the special 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 30.

The hybrid sandwich from Honey Butter's team (owners/chefs Christine Cikowski and Joshua Kulp, plus partners Jen Mayer and Chris Jennings) pairs fried chicken, Green River pickled shallots, Half Acre beer mustard, celery salt, pickled Fresno peppers and cherry tomatoes on a poppy seed bun. (It was last served to mark the closing of Hot Doug's.) It's $8, with $1 of every sandwich sold donated to Sohn's charity of choice, The Shriver Center, which works to advance justice and opportunity for people living in poverty.

The sandwich will be available Sept. 30 to Oct. 4 at Honey Butter Fried Chicken, 3361 N. Elston Ave. 773-478-4000, www.honeybutter.com.

Sohn, Mr. "Encased Meats" to lovers of his creative line of links, has been busy since closing his sausage emporium, cooking up links for concessions at Wrigley Field and chairing a culinary fundraiser for the Shriver Center Oct. 8 at Salvage One, 1840 W. Hubbard St.
