Doug Pederson on James Robinson: ‘It’s not anything about lack of confidence’

James Robinson touched the ball once late in the second quarter of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 23-17 loss to the New York Giants, but the play was negated by a 15-yard penalty on tight end Chris Manhertz.

Earlier in the quarter, Robinson was targeted on what could’ve been a touchdown pass but was just overthrown by quarterback Trevor Lawrence. And that was it for Robinson, who spent most of his day Sunday watching Travis Etienne from the sideline.

After the game, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson suggested that Robinson — who hasn’t appeared on any injury report since the season started — wasn’t quite healthy.

“We have to evaluate him and see where he is at physically health-wise and all of that,” Pederson said of Robinson. “He has been good each week and something that we’ve got to really take a look at and see. We know [Etienne] has done a nice job kind of taking over there, but we need everybody. We need James, and we’ve got a lot of confidence in James still. It’s not anything about lack of confidence or anything. We just have to make sure he is 100 percent before we move forward.”

Robinson, 24, suffered a season-ending Achilles tear near the end of the 2021 season, but returned in time for the season opener and started the year on a tear. During the Jaguars’ 2-1 start to the year, Robinson had 51 carries for 230 yards and three rushing touchdowns, as well as six receptions and a touchdown catch.

Since then, Robinson has seen his snaps dwindle as Etienne has gone from a complementary back to the Jaguars’ full-time choice at running back.

Pederson said he expects to have an update on Robinson’s health Monday.
