Doug Pederson on his comfort level with Nate Sudfeld as Eagles’ backup QB

Carson Wentz is the Philadelphia Eagles’ franchise quarterback, but as we’ve seen around the NFL, your organization is only as good as your backup quarterback. Wentz suffered a season-ending injury in each of the last two years, but the Eagles made the playoffs both times because Nick Foles was the best backup in the NFL.

Foles is no longer in Philadelphia, taking his talents to Jacksonville and leaving the job to Nate Sudfeld. The former Indiana Hoosiers star has never taken a meaningful NFL snap in his career, but Doug Pederson is still comfortable with using him if called upon.

“I’ve always been comfortable with Nate and the guys we have. This is a great opportunity for Nate to take hold of that backup spot and see his growth and potential moving forward,” Pederson said.

“As a coach, all I can do is give him the opportunity, coach him up and put it in his hands.”

Sudfeld’s understanding of the offense and his reading of defenses have grown by leaps and bounds over the past two seasons, and this summer he should take the next step in his progression with the added reps.
