Doubt hangs over 2021 edition of the popular Stirling Highland Games

This year’s Stirling Highland Games event hangs in the balance as the organisers are to make a decision on whether or not the games will go ahead.

The popular games are earmarked to take place on Saturday, August 21, at Stirling Sports Village.

However, the organising committee is to meet next month to make a final decision.

President of the Stirling Highland Games Matt McGrandles said: “The Stirling Highland Games committee held its meeting last month to discuss the delivery options I presented to them. It’s a very difficult time for all organisers of highland games in Scotland as we have to prepare several options so, based on the Government guidelines at that time, we are ready to deliver a 2021 event or indeed a version of it.

“We are hugely conscious of the fact that our event is more than just an official highland games event for its competitors, it brings thousands of visitors to the area who spend money in the city centre and surrounding area. Our 2019 event boosted the local economy by over £414,000 and the committee is just keen for the event to be able to support the wider community again should the green light be given to hosting large gatherings.

“The committee has agreed to make that decision in April based on the latest Government guidelines.”

A number of games across Scotland have already been cancelled, including on Skye, at Glamis Castle in Angus, Cupar in Fife, Kenmore in Perthshire, Lochcarron in the Highlands and Tomintoul in Moray.
