Double weather warning for Wales as Met Office confirms heavy rain and strong winds on Wednesday

The Met Office has issued a double weather warning for rain and wind in Wales beginning on Wednesday.

Meteorologists are warning that the unsettled weather pattern will mean an unpleasant couple of days for western and southern areas of the country, with the threat for flooding, travel delays and power cuts.

Here's what to expect as the stormy weather moves through:

A yellow weather warning for wind is set to come into effect at 2pm on Wednesday and last until 3am on Thursday.

The forecast says: "Strong southeasterly winds are expected to develop during Wednesday afternoon across parts of southwest England and west Wales before spreading to Northern Ireland and parts of southwest Scotland later.

"Winds will tend to ease from the south during Wednesday evening."

The strongest winds are predicted to affect exposed coastal areas and high ground, with gusts reaching as high as 70mph.

Meanwhile, inland locations are likely to see gusts peak between 45 and 55 mph.

Areas affected by the warning include:

  • Bridgend
  • Carmarthenshire
  • Ceredigion
  • Conwy
  • Gwynedd
  • Isle of Anglesey
  • Neath Port Talbot
  • Pembrokeshire
  • Powys
  • Swansea
  • Vale of Glamorgan

Residents in these areas should prepare for large waves in coastal areas, particularly in the south and southeast, and delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport.

There is also the potential for a short term loss of power.

Yellow weather warning for rain

A second yellow weather warning - this time for rain - will come into effect later in the day on Wednesday.

Lasting from 4pm until midnight, the warning is expected to unleash 20-30mm of rain in a six to nine hour period.

High ground in south Wales and areas such as Dartmoor could see as much as as 60mm in that time frame.

According to the warning, the heavy rain is expected to cause a few problems as it moves eastwards across southwestern areas later on Wednesday.

Areas affected by the warning include:

  • Blaenau Gwent
  • Bridgend
  • Caerphilly
  • Cardiff
  • Merthyr Tydfil
  • Monmouthshire
  • Neath Port Talbot
  • Newport
  • Rhondda Cynon Taf
  • Torfaen

Meteorologists are warning that the downpours will increase the risk for flooding to homes and businesses.
