Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. changed the name of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ to MUFG Bank on Sunday.
The omission of "Tokyo" from the name, which was a relic from the merger with the Bank of Tokyo, an institution that had been well-known internationally as Japan's sole authorized foreign exchange bank, removes a visible connection to the once-famous bank.
Changing names on signs and other necessary work had been finished by Sunday at all branches, as the bank prepared for the first business day on Monday under the new name.
Bankbooks and ATM cards that carry the old name are still valid. While bank transactions need to be completed using the new name, the old name will be accepted at ATMs until June 29.
