A man and an eight-year-old girl have died after a house fire in Hull.
Neighbours watched in horror as smoke poured out of the terrace house in the early hours of this morning.
Both Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service rushed to scene just before 8am, but they were unable to save the pair.
Neighbour Carl Goodfellow, who lives on the street, said he desperately tried to warn the family of the fire by banging on the door and shouting through the letterbox.
He told Hull Live he came outside when he could hear shouting and saw smoke coming out of the house.
Mr Goodfellow said: “It’s devastating, you just don’t expect this sort of thing do you.
“I know him as a neighbour, we sent each other Christmas cards and stuff, but hadn’t been inside each others houses or anything.”
A woman whose daughter knew the little girl who tragically died said: “I’m heartbroken. I just can’t believe it, I just can’t believe it.”
Neighbour, Shelbie Rhodes, 25, said she saw three fire engines, two ambulances and four police cars at the scene initially and added that residents were told to go back inside by police.
Shelbie, who moved onto the street with her boyfriend and little boy in October, said: “I was woken up by the flashing lights.
“My boyfriend came down first and stood in the front garden and then I put my dressing gown on and went out too.
“Literally everyone was stood outside.”
Humberside Police cordoned off the home on Wensley Avenue and the road was also cordoned off until around 11.30am.
A team of fire investigation dogs deployed by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service are also at the scene helping officers with the operation.
Shelbie Rhodes, 25, who moved onto the street with her boyfriend and little boy in October, said: “I was woken up by the flashing lights. My boyfriend came down first and stood in the front garden and then I put my dressing gown on and went out too.

She said there were three fire engines, two ambulances and four police cars at the scene initially and added that residents were told to go back inside by police.
She added: “When you see that your first instinct is just to think is everyone okay?”
Another resident, who didn’t want to be named, said: “It’s really worrying, I just wanted to come down and see what had happened because I was wondering who it was.
“Living down here you get to know everyone.”
A Humberside Police statement said: "Emergency services are currently at the scene of a fire at a house on Wensley Avenue in Hull.
"Humberside Fire and Rescue, ambulance and police were called at 7.50am today to reports of a fire at a house.
"Emergency services worked to extinguish the fire and get the occupants out of the building
"Tragically two people have died in the fire. A man was pronounced dead at the scene and an eight year-old girl, who had been taken to hospital, has sadly died.
"There will be a scene guard in place today as emergency services continue to work together to establish the cause of the fire.
