Double success for primary pupils as Beat the Street competition crowns winning school

A local primary school is celebrating after being crowned winners of the Rutherglen and Cambuslang Beat the Street competition.

Burnside Primary School finished top of the leader boards for schools' total tally of points and schools' average points.

That means the youngsters' achievement is doubly impressive and they will be presented with two trophies for coming in first place in both categories; and will also pick up two sets of £300 book or sport vouchers.

The pupils are pictured proudly displaying their winning fobs after a successful run in the six-week challenge.

The popular game launched in September and saw 8535 people all take part, racking up a fantastic 118,351 miles in total.

As well as prizes for the winners, the mass participation by the community meant a donation of £500 was able to be given to help Kilbride Hospice.

Beat the Street was designed by a doctor to get communities moving by helping people to make small changes, such as walking or cycling to school every day.

And a huge benefit to the community has been the competition helping to improve physical and mental health by embedding physical activity into everyday life.

Speaking on the school's victory, Helen McGarvey, headteacher at Burnside Primary told Lanarkshire Live : "The game is so well designed and great fun. It so inclusive too - everyone can join in.

"It encourages the community to exercise and enjoy being outdoors while having great fun and spending time together.

"It's been great to see the real team effort from everyone; our children (and staff!) have thoroughly enjoyed getting on board."

During the game, children used fobs provided by the school. Meanwhile, for adults taking part, they were able to pick up a free card from one of the distribution points listed on the Beat the Street website.

Players were then tasked with finding their nearest ‘Beat Box’ which appeared on lampposts around the town.

There were 63 of these around the area and they had been adapted to make them more sensitive so that locals didn't need to touch them – participants would hover their card or fob over the Beat Box which would flash to record points.

South Lanarkshire Council leader, Councillor John Ross, said the towns of Cambuslang and Rutherglen "have achieved something amazing".

He also hopes the initiative in Rutherglen and Cambuslang can help kick-start healthier habits in the lifestyles of members of the community.

Councillor Ross added: “Everyone who took part and has made positive lifestyle changes is a winner.

"We hope to be in touch with all participants to help carry on these great habits and to signpost other useful resources that will help with physical and mental health.

"Thanks to all who took part.”

The school expect to have their prize presentation in the coming weeks.
