A duo was motivated by money when they plotted a calculated drug rip that escalated into "extreme harm" at Gateshead, when a man fired a rifle multiple times, striking two people, a jury heard.
Emmett Sheard and Dakota Rhianne Clarke are facing a three-week trial in Newcastle District Court.
They are each accused of attempting to murder a man, and wounding a woman in the process, at a Lake Macquarie home in the early hours of September 21, 2023.
They face two alternative charges each of discharging a firearm with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Sheard and Clarke have pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
The prosecution case is that Sheard was concealing a rifle in his tracksuit pants when the duo went to the Gateshead home under the ruse of buying drugs, but instead ambushed the occupants.
The Crown case is that Sheard was the one who fired two bullets through a closed door, striking a man in the arm and a woman in the leg, when their robbery demands were met with resistance.
Prosecutors allege Clarke was part of an extended joint criminal enterprise because she agreed to participate and should have foreseen the possibility that Sheard would shoot with the intent to kill or cause serious harm.
Crown prosecutor Liam Shaw detailed in his opening address how the events allegedly unfolded in the early hours.
Mr Shaw said CCTV captured two people walking along the street about 2.14am before the alleged "calculated home invasion driven by money ... escalated into extreme harm".
He alleged Sheard knew the man and had organised to meet him to buy about $1800 worth of methamphetamine, or the drug known as ice.
"They gained entry through deception, arriving under the guise of a routine drug purchase," Mr Shaw told the court.
It was not long after that Sheard allegedly pulled the firearm out and pointed the barrel at the man's face. He allegedly said "are you f---ing serious" and Sheard yelled "give me your f---ing drugs".
The prosecution case is that the man managed to retreat to a hallway and close the door, but Sheard allegedly fired a bullet through it, striking the man in the arm and causing a significant wound.
A woman at the home heard the commotion and ran into the hallway, but as she approached the closed door, another bullet was allegedly fired through it, striking her in the upper thigh.
Mr Shaw said the two alleged victims retreated to another room, where Sheard and the man struggled, before Sheard and Clarke fled the house.
Prosecutors allege the rifle was discharged multiple times throughout the ordeal and the crime scene was "scattered with ammunition" when police arrived.
The court heard the woman called triple zero just after 2.20am and both alleged victims were taken to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle for surgical treatment.
Sheard was arrested at Wallsend on September 25 and Clarke was arrested on November 1.
Mr Shaw said the Crown would rely on a combination of evidence expected to be heard during the trial, including from CCTV, through DNA evidence and telecommunications data.
The trial continues in Newcastle District Court on Tuesday, when defence barristers are expected to give their opening addresses to the jury.
