Double rescue in Gower after multiple swimmers get caught in rip current

A teenage lifeguard carried out a double rescue after multiple swimmers got caught in a rip current off popular Gower bay.

Lifeguard Tom Henderson was on Langland beach in Gower on Thursday when he spotted two young swimmers struggling in a rip current.

The 17-year-old immediately paddled out on a rescue board to help them, but as he made his way back to shore he could see a father and daughter also in distress.

Tom passed the first two casualties over his colleague and made his way over to the second set of struggling swimmers.

Lifeguard Nathaniel Palla also paddled out and the pair of lifeguards took a casualty each back to the beach.

The RNLI has warned people to be careful of their surroundings, particularly as the current is unpredictable, and can change instantly.

Swansea Lifeguard Supervisor Jessica Gates said: "The rescues were an awesome team effort and an example of how quickly someone can get swept out in a strong rip. Remember to always stay well within your depth and swim between the red and yellow flags."

The RNLI advises the public to always visit a lifeguarded beach, where trained professionals patrol the beach, assess the weather and sea conditions and advise the public accordingly.
