Double knife killer caught with deadly shank made from lollipop sticks and blade in Scots prison

A double killer has admitted carrying a homemade weapon for personal protection in one of Scotland's toughest jails .

Andrew Moran, 23, handed over the blade moments before his cell at HMP Shotts was to be searched by guards.

He had glued two lollipop sticks together and planted a razor blade between them.

That was removed and Moran was sent to segregation for three days and had all privileges removed at the Lanarkshire jail.

He appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court where he admitted having the weapon in April last year.

Moran, who is now being held in HMP Glenochil, was given a two-year sentence but told it will run alongside his 24 year jail term for murder.

Moran was caged after being convicted of murdering two men in 2014.

Depute fiscal Paula Russell said: "Officers were instructed to carry out a search in respect of his cell.

"He handed over a small handmade weapon from his clothing which was made up of two lollipops which had been glued together with a razor blade stuck in the middle."

The court heard Moran told prison officers he was carrying the homemade weapon for his own protection.

Sheriff Marie Smart said: "This is a very serious matter endangering prisoners and prison staff."

Moran and accomplice Paul Erskine, 23, were caged in 2015 after killing Steven Mitchell, 31, and Harry Reekie, 66, in Bathgate, West Lothian.

The two separate attacks saw Mr Mitchell stabbed to death at a house where bloody footprints from Moran and Erskine's new trainers were left behind.

Mr Reekie had tape wrapped around his mouth and wrists and was repeatedly struck with knives as he was threatened and robbed of £400, bank cards and phones.

He died four months later from his injuries.
