Double fatality as car plunges into lake in Perth's north-east

Two young women have died after their car plunged into a lake in Perth's north-east.

Police say the car was travelling south on Edgerton Road in Aveley on Sunday morning before it turned right onto Gnangara Road and, for unknown reasons, continued across the median strip and into a nearby lake.

Two 20-year-old women, the driver and passenger, both died at the scene.

Inspector Craig Collins from the State Operations Command Division said the two women had been on their way to work.

He said there was no information yet about what could have caused the vehicle to veer towards the water.

"It's early stages of the investigation, we haven't got anything other than we don't believe there's any other vehicle involved," Inspector Collins said.

"I believe there were people that tried to assist — unfortunately, due to the location, tragically it was very difficult.

"Our thoughts are with the families at the moment."

Major Crash investigators are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with dash cam vision, to contact police.
