Double demerits kick in over long weekend

ACT has joined NSW police in instigating double demerits over the Australia Day long weekend.

The double demerits are in place until 11.59pm on Monday.

The doubling of the penalties will be specifically for seatbelt, speeding, mobile phone usage and for motorcycle riders not wearing helmets. All other traffic offences will incur one extra demerit point during the period.

Fines will not change.

ACT's officer in charge of traffic operations, detective station sergeant Marcus Boorman said drivers who do the wrong thing should expect to be caught.

"I'd like to remind anyone using the long weekend for a quick getaway to take that extra bit of time, to take care, and to look out for each other on the roads," he said.
