Double demerits will be enforced from midnight as police join forces to stamp out dangerous driving over the Easter long weekend.
ACT and NSW police will be out in force over the Easter long weekend, with double demerits in place until Monday.
ACT Policing Detective Inspector Donna Hofmeier said road patrols would be out in force across the ACT and particularly the "notorious" Kings Highway targeting drivers headed to and from the South Coast.
"There's always in increase in traffic at Easter as people travel to and from the ACT, so police will be working on both sides of the border targeting dangerous driving behaviour," she said.
"Although it's an Easter break, road safety doesn't take a break."
"In the ACT this year we've already had four deaths. We don't want to see any more on the roads especially not only around the Easter period but the school holidays afterwards."
NSW Police acting Inspector Adam Kite said road safety was always a priority and even more so on busy roads on long weekends.
"While we'll be doing everything we can to target dangerous driving on our shared highways, I implore everyone driving this weekend to take their responsibilities behind the wheel seriously," he said.
"Motorists can expect to see police from both NSW and the ACT working along the full length of the Kings Highway."
Double demerit points will apply in the ACT from Thursday to Monday.
For all speeding, seatbelt, riding without a helmet and mobile phone offences, double the usual demerit points will apply. An additional demerit point will also apply for all other traffic offences.
