Double decker economy seat design means passengers could lie flat to sleep

Let's face it, when you're flying in economy class, you know you're unlikely to get a good night's sleep even if you do know all the handy tricks.

But a new economy cabin design for planes could offer the ideal solution - and it's all thanks to a double decker style layout.

Start-up firm Zephyr Aerospace, behind the cabin design, shared some renderings to show just how they envision the stacked seating would work.

Instead of rows of three seats together, the seats would be laid out along the aisles in rows of one or two separated 'cabins', stacked on top of another. (Incidentally, this would make social distancing a lot easier too).

If you wanted to sleep, no need to awkwardly try and stick to your limited space. Instead, your seat can be transformed thanks to smaller platforms that create a larger surface.

Lift the platform where your traditional leg room would be, and voila; you can lie flat for a sleep.

It's a very tempting solution; you get to lie down properly for a kip, and you don't need to push back your seat to try and get more comfortable, meaning nobody else has to give up some of their personal space.

The design also allows for 'lounging' if you don't want to stay in the upright seated position but you're not quite ready for a full lie down.

At the moment the layout is very much at a concept-only stage. However, Zephyr Aerospace says that it is currently in discussions with commercial airlines and seating manufacturers to see how the Zephyr Seat could be brought to the aviation world.

For now, we'll have to stick to bringing travel pillows, blankets and comfortable clothes to increase the chance of some in-flight beauty sleep!
