Rare native horses known as dosanko raced along a road stretching across the Shizunai Livestock Farm of the Hokkaido University in Shinhidaka, Hokkaido, on Friday.
The farm, located halfway up the Hidaka Mountains, measures at about 470 hectares.
About 70 dosanko horses, which are smaller than thoroughbreds at a height of about 130 centimeters, are seen running en masse at the farm during their monthly weight checks.
According to Masahito Kawai, an associate professor at Hokkaido University, the number of dosanko, which supported soil maintenance and transportation in Hokkaido during the development era, has dropped to about 1,000. Nearly 30 foals are expected to be born on the farm next month.
