Dorus de Vries pays tribute to Nottingham Forest fans after making big career decision

Dorus de Vries has paid tribute to Nottingham Forest’s supporters after hanging up his gloves to call time on his career.

The Dutchman has decided to retire at the age of 38 after playing just 10 times last season for Celtic, the club he joined from Forest in 2016, to continue working on his coaching badges.

During his three-year spell at Forest, de Vries made 63 appearances after arriving at the City Ground on a free transfer from Wolves in 2013, going on to win Player of the Season in his final campaign on Trentside and becoming a firm fans favourite in the process.

During that campaign, de Vries kept 11 shut-outs which was only recently bettered this term by Costel Pantilimon who managed 15.

"After 20+ years as a professional footballer it is time for me to hang up my boots and gloves,” he wrote in an emotional post on Instagram.

“I would like to thank all of u who supported me on this fantastic journey i had as a professional football player.

“I am very fortunate to have played for some fantastic and well supported clubs and I would like to thank everyone who worked closely with me, my family and friends, my former teammates, my agent, management, coaches, backroom staff and supporters at Telstar, ADO Den Haag, Dunfermline, Swansea city, Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Celtic.

“Now its time for a bit of a break but after holidays i will continue to work on my coaching badges and will start a master in sport management at the Johan Cruyff university which is something i am very excited about.”
