Borussia Dortmund confirm they will not join Super League in first blow for new competition

Borussia Dortmund have released a statement saying they will not join the European Super League.

12 clubs announced on Sunday that they would be joining the breakaway competition.

Six of those came from the Premier League as Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham were named as founding members.

Three clubs from Spain - Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid - and three from Italy - Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan - are also part of the movement.

Notably German champions Bayern Munich were not involved, neither were Dortmund, winners of the Champions League in 1997.

The European Super League is looking to rival the Champions League after they announced plans to revamp the competition.

But Dortmund have come out and said they will not join the breakaway tournament.

The club's CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has said: “The clubs wants to implement the planned reform of the UEFA Champions League. The plans to found a Super League have been rejected”

Bayern are yet to formerly release a statement but the expectation is they will not join.

Fans across the continent have hit out at the proposals and club ownership rules in Germany give supporters considerable power, meaning any move is likely to be opposed.

French giants and last year's Champions League finalists PSG have also not joined.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is set to hold the Super League's chairman with Liverpool's John W. Henry, Arsenal's Stan Kroenke, Man United's Joel Glazer and Juventus ' Andrea Agnelli also involved in the hierarchy.
